Balqees is passionate about helping people build genuine relationships with the communities they serve and turning complex ideas into stories that inspire people to act.

She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Communications from Simon Fraser University and brings a background in community organizing and governance. Before joining Emdash, Balqees worked in the nonprofit sector, designing custom curricula and facilitating capacity-building workshops for organizations. Her work has shaped policy and practice within post-secondary institutions through student leadership and advocacy. 

Balqees is drawn to projects that connect people and create lasting social impact. In recognition of her impact, she was recognized as one of Canada's Top Black Women to Watch in 2022 (CIBWE) and was nominated for YWCA BC's Woman of Distinction award in 2024.
